RDA ST HELENS
Horses are being worked and it is hoped to have a return to riding in late October, early November.
RDA St Helens was established in 2004. We were lucky to have access to an existing Equestrian Grounds which is part of the Council owned St Helens Recreational and Sporting Facility. We began with just a portable round yard and a couple of borrowed Pony Club horses belonging to volunteers. From there we have developed a functioning riding centre and through the assistance of the council now have our own paddock next to the Equestrian Grounds. We have a small herd of 4 horses who cater for a wide range of riders aged from 3-36yrs.The centre and horses are run and cared for by a small band of 10 dedicated volunteers. With the demand in the community rising for programs such as we run, we are currently in need of more volunteers and horses.
Our facility includes a fully fenced 30x60m arena with rubber matting around the inside with a 10x20m mounting yard which includes an Australian Standards loading/mounting ramp. The clubrooms have a fully functioning kitchenette and disabled toilet attached. We hope to continue to develop the facility and include some stables and eventually a roof over the arena when funding can be sourced.
We aim to offer a therapeutic equine assisted program which not only aids in the improvement in the quality of life of those in our community with a disability but also addresses the growing need to help the disadvantaged/at risk community members. Connecting with the horses and achieving goals are very empowering moments and participants in the program stand to not only improve their physical and psychological wellbeing but learn to trust, communicate effectively and feel they belong.
